LWVSJ Observer Corps*: San Juan Island School Board September 30, 2026

Public Comment:  Parent Eliza Habegger is concerned about the use of AI in the classroom.   She made three recommendations: 1. Remove Google Gemini in all Chrome books. 2. Consider Los Angeles Unified School District AI use policy.  3. Gather community input on using AI in the classroom.

Superintendent Woods’ Report:  Despite an available grant for a new electric bus, the total cost precluded purchasing a full-sized EV.  However, the administration may make a request for a smaller EV bus to the board next month.  The planning committee will meet next week to work on the 27-28, 28-29 school year calendar.

ASB Report:  Vera Schoultz reported on school activities: fall sports; club day; spirit week; Eco club clothing swap; homecoming parade (in the rain); and homecoming dance.  More tickets were sold for the dance than total students at FHHS!

State Assessment Report:  Superintendent Woods presented the results of last spring’s assessment.  Director Heller asked about math scores; Principal Hillman stated that there was significant improvement.

Review of 25-26 School improvement plans:  Principals Wehner (FHES), Turnbull (FHMS) and Hillman (FHHS) all presented results, as well as Superintendent Woods for Griffin Bay School.  Director Heller noted positive results for all schools. 

The Board approved the yearly Transitional Bilingual Instruction Program grant.

The San Juan Public Schools Foundation granted $4,683.38 for classroom supplies. 

Finance Director Emily Blake reviewed the August financial report and the September enrollment report. Enrollment for September was slightly below forecast.  Revenue continues to be on plan.
